Known as purslane, this common plant can grow almost anywhere. You might be familiar with it, but what you might not know is that its leaves possess amazing health benefits, therefore, the next time, think twice before pulling it and throwing it away. In a lot of cultures, people consume it as food as well.

It’s rich in antioxidants and vitamins and its leaves have a pleasant lemony taste, a crunchy texture, which makes it an excellent addition to different meals or a replacement for spinach. The high amount of protein will provide you with energy and strength.

These are some additional benefits purslane offers:

  • Being rich in omega-3 fatty acids, it protects from stroke and heart disease
  • Reduces the risk of ADHD in children, autism, and other developmental disorders
  • It has an abundance of vitamin A which protects from cancer
  • It’s rich in iron and calcium which are crucial for the bones
  • It has 6 times more vitamin E than spinach and 7 times more beta-carotene than carrots
  • It’s rich in dietary fiber and a low calorie count
  • It’s rich in vitamin C, riboflavin, potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus

The seeds of purslane are so potent that the plant may live up to 25 years. 3 weeks after you notice seedlings, the seeds and flowers will appear.

Important to note: those who have oxalate urinary tract stones are advised to avoid purslane since it contains oxalic acid which may crystallize ax oxalate stones.
